Compact Refrigerators

Problem with my Kenmore 2.7 cu ft. refrigerator?

I've had this fridge for about two years and now, and even though it sounds fine, it isn't cooling. I took the plug out for a day just to see if it would work when plugged back in, but it still does not cool at all. The model # in question is Kenmore 183.92779.Any ideas on how I could fix it myself? Here is a link to the model http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_04692779000P?vName=Appliances&cName=Refrigerators&sName=Compact+Refrigerators

  1. There's not too much that can go wrong with that unit, aside from the compressor failing or the unit leaking out all its freon. Here's a quick and dirty test. With the unit on and the compressor running for a few minutes, unplug the unit for about 5 sec and plug it back in. If the unit has a full charge of freon, then the motor will not be able to restart against the pressurized system. There is an overload protector on the motor that should cut out for about 3 minutes, to allow the system time to depressurize so the compressor can start. If, when yu plug it back in, the system tries to start, but shuts off for a few minutes, and then starts, then that's good. If the unit starts up immediately after plugging it back in, that's bad. If its a compressor or freon issue, your better off to junk it and buy another one. By law, you can't touch a sealed system unless your certified. If you where certified, you wouldn't be asking this question. Sealed system techs are not cheap, and only worth it if its a full size fridge, and that all depends on their age and how expensive they are to replace.
  2. My buddy had a fridge he was going to junk cause it didnt work. I thought I would take a look. Turned out that there was so much lint in the bottom and back that the unit couldn't get rid of the heat. My suggestion, unplug the unit pull off bottom back etc.. clean the crap out of it, try it again.
