Compact Refrigerators

Is it safe to run a small fridge in my bedroom?

I have a small Sanyo fridge that I would like to run in my bedroom. The outlets here have 3 prongs. The floor is carpeted. Is this safe? Or do I need a special type of outlet? Can I use an extension cord? Does it have to be a specific type? Thanks! If it helps, my house was made in the 1950's and I live in the US. Is it up to "current codes"?

  1. It's safe, except if you are trying to diet :) those little refrigerators take little juice and would not trip the circuit breaker. the noise may bother you some, but maybe the benefits of having it close by outweigh the annoyance of the hum Good luck
  2. Yes, it is safe. Some hotel rooms also house small fridges.
  3. Check the nameplate rating on the fridge. It should tell you the rating in amps of the fridge. If your bedroom is wired according to the current code, you have a 20 amp circuit. If wired according to old codes, possibly 15 amps. You can trace this circuit and find out. The duplex should be compatible, and you can have beer within reach. Code changes every 3 years. Three prong means that it has 120V with ground. New code makes the outlet have an arc-fault device.
  4. No different than running it in the kitchen, dinning room or basement.Safe and you don't need a special outlet. An outlet would be better than an extension cord.
  5. Yes its safe with a 3 prong outlet, just besure not to plug more than two items to each plug unless you use a grounded surge protector . I have one in my room on the carpet and the only thing I worry about is keeping the kids out.
  6. It's absolutely safe, just give the back of it a some air room so it doesn't overheat. I had a mini-fridge as a nightstand on carpet in my old house for years. It was also on an extension cord when I was in college. It'll be fine.
