Compact Refrigerators

The freezer in my mini fridge is spraying gas becuz i poked a hole in it, Wut type of gas is it, and is it bad

So i was clearing out the ice in the freezer of my mini fridge and accidentally poked a small hole(the size of the tip of a pen) in the metal sheet that serves as the bottom of the freezer...now the hole sprays some type of gas/liquid every time i plug it in. What is this gas/liquid? How do I stop it from spraying/fix it? And is it dangerous? could i just cover the hole with duct tape?

  1. Either one of the freons or puron. If its a mini-frig, then there is not a whole lot in it- but it will all vaporize into a gas and fill your kitchen- or what ever room it is in. Take it out side. Its dead. You don't want to breath it too long-its not good for you. You can not fix it either.
  2. DUCT TAPE YO
  3. depending on the age of the unit...old it could be freon.. more recent a new type of compound which is not as bad for the environment. There is not enough to hurt you and it will soon be gone. when the gas is coming out have an open window or door. After the first few minutes it will just be air with a trace of refrigerant. The compressor pushes air instead of refrigerant.. if the freezer is no longer cool then all the gas is gone. You need to call a repair man. If the unit is old you are probably better off to get a new one.. Even if it it relatively new a service call will run $100 or more..not easy to repair a coil (the part that is leaking). Good luck and next time you clean it use a soft rag or soft plastic like a spatchla. I am surprised you would be able to poke a hole .. it is just thin aluminum but still not that easy to penetrate... easy to bend but not easy to poke through.
  4. Sounds like a freon leak, but dh says that it shouldn't hurt you, as long as you don't eat it or stick your head in and inhale deeply, but other than that...... As far as stopping it from spraying? Because it is a high pressure gas, you probably won't be able to stop it...best to unplug the fridge now, so as not to burn up the compressor. The spray will stop when the freon is gone. You'll need to have a professional take a look to see if it can be repaired, but odds are, you are going to have to replace it.
  5. R12, sound like it's time for a new fridge
  6. Except for one dodo, you have all the answers you need here. Just get rid of the dead mini fridge and air out the kitchen and adjacent rooms good!
  7. It is a the freon/refrigerant. The unit doesn't hold much, and is not a danger to you or your family unless you stick your head in there for 5-10 minutes, breathing the gas. The cost to fix the unit will be infeasable-economically. You could recoup a few bucks by stripping the unit of it's aluminum, but it's probably not worth your time. Good luck and God Bless.
